Windham Public Schools has received a $175,000 state Learner Engagement and Attendance Program grant, according to its October 5 announcement.

LEAP uses trained school staff and community partners to reach families, identify barriers to attending school and strengthen school relationships. Windham says it was among the 15 districts that began participating in 2021; this funding round totals $6.2 million across 29 districts.

The district reported that chronic absenteeism fell eight percentage points in 2025–26. Its September 30 snapshot placed the current-year rate at 16.64%, with lower rates at Sweeney and Natchaug elementary schools and Windham Middle School.

Those September figures are an early-year snapshot, not a completed 2026–27 result. The district also announced a 60-day attendance challenge for students and staff.

This article attributes the funding and attendance figures to Windham’s own report. The announcement does not provide an itemized spending plan or independently establish how much of the improvement is attributable to LEAP.
