VERNON — Drivers who illegally pass a stopped school bus now face a $250 civil fine under Vernon’s camera-enforcement program, according to the town’s September 29 announcement.
Bus-mounted cameras recorded 362 violations between August 27 and September 25. The town says police reviewed and validated every incident, and warning letters were mailed during that introductory period.
Five cameras were installed on each of the 37 buses operated by transportation contractor First Student. Police review the recordings before deciding whether a citation is appropriate.
The town describes the camera-program first-offense penalty as $250 without license points. Its announcement distinguishes that civil penalty from an officer-observed violation, which carries different penalties.
Drivers should review the town’s school-bus safety page for stopping requirements. The September figures describe the warning period; they are not a current October count or evidence that violations have since increased or decreased.
