STONINGTON — Applied Physical Sciences plans to establish a new headquarters at READCO’s proposed technology park on Route 2 in Pawcatuck, according to The Day’s October 20 report on the developer’s announcement and zoning hearing.
The General Dynamics subsidiary would be the project’s anchor. The Day reported that a first phase could exceed $50 million and include about 80,000 square feet of light-industrial space and a four-story research-and-development building of roughly the same size.
The proposal remains in the land-use review process. The newspaper reported that an October 20 hearing on the site plan and groundwater-protection application would continue November 17 as the developer works through traffic and stormwater details. The announcement does not mean the current applications have received final approval.
Applied Physical Sciences’ official website identifies it as a wholly owned General Dynamics subsidiary developing technology for national-security and commercial customers. Its contact page lists headquarters on Bridge Street in Groton and a fabrication-and-integration facility on Mechanic Street in Pawcatuck.
According to The Day, the planned campus is intended to bring employees together and expand research, development and production capacity. The company’s work includes undersea technologies and prototype systems.
Traffic remains a point of discussion. The Day reported that project representatives presented simulations while residents questioned whether the analysis fully reflected surrounding growth. The newspaper said state traffic approval would also be needed.
The company’s eventual use of existing facilities is not settled. The report describes maintaining flexible options, including the possibility of leaving its current headquarters office after the new one is complete; it does not establish that every existing location will close.
