STONINGTON — Stonington Public Schools says it issued sanctions after investigating spectator conduct during the September 25 varsity football game against New London at Stonington High School.

The district’s final report found credible that a male spectator made an inappropriate remark referring to New London players as “animals.” According to The Day’s October 23 report on the findings, investigators described the language as dehumanizing and a violation of the district’s civility policy, while saying they could not substantiate a racist intent.

Acting Superintendent Timothy Smith did not identify the spectator or describe the sanctions. In an October 21 statement, the district said identities and sanctions would remain confidential to protect student-athletes who may be connected to spectators.

The review also examined conduct by players, coaches and staff. The district said Stonington athletes and staff showed poise and sportsmanship. The report said New London players removed Velcro padding from a goalpost after the game, their coach stopped the conduct, the padding was replaced and no property damage occurred.

New London Athletic Director Phil Orbe reviewed the report and declined comment to The Day. New London coach Jack Cochran had previously said Stonington’s coach and staff were not involved and attributed the remark to one person.

The district’s conclusions are an administrative review, not a court finding. No identities or confidential disciplinary details are inferred here.
