STERLING — Oneco Fire Company is inviting new volunteers to join, saying people can apply from age 16 and do not need prior fire-service experience, according to a recruitment message shared by WINY Radio on October 27.
The appeal describes learning practical skills, building confidence and joining a team that serves the community. It encourages prospective members to stop by and meet company members. The message does not announce an application deadline, an open-house date or a training schedule.
Sterling’s official fire-department directory lists Oneco Fire Department at 1146 Plainfield Pike and gives its non-emergency telephone number as 860-564-7425. The directory describes Oneco as operating one station serving a primarily residential area of about 28 square miles.
Oneco and Sterling Volunteer Fire Department are separately listed companies. Residents seeking to join Oneco should contact Oneco directly to confirm the application process, available roles, training and any requirements for younger members; the recruitment message does not establish that every age group may perform every duty.
The recruitment account is attributed to the department’s message carried by WINY. Eastern CT News did not conduct an interview. The accompanying photograph is an archive image from an April 2025 response, not a recruitment event.
