Sterling’s Board of Finance is scheduled to revisit proposed tax relief for volunteer firefighters and emergency personnel October 14 at 7 p.m., according to its published agenda. The meeting is at the municipal building, 1183 Plainfield Pike in Oneco, with advance registration for Zoom access.

Minutes from September 9, included in tonight’s packet, record Fire Chief Wayne Glaude’s proposal and a unanimous 5–0 vote to defer it until the ordinance and its conditions were finalized.

Glaude described relief of up to $2,000 per qualifying member. The minutes estimated annual costs of about $66,000 for the then-current membership of 33, or $100,000 at the 50-member ceiling described at the meeting. Those are conditional estimates, not approved spending or promised payments.

Proposed qualifications discussed in September included training and certification, good-standing points, call participation and provisions for long-serving members. The minutes connect the idea to volunteer recruitment and retention, while recording a path through drafting, legal review, a public hearing and a town meeting.

Tonight’s agenda also returns separate library-certification and municipal staffing funding requests for consideration. It does not record their approval or establish that the firefighter ordinance is ready for adoption.

Residents can review the agenda and September minutes in the official packet before attending. The agenda allows five minutes per speaker during Audience of Citizens. The final ordinance, eligibility rules, funding source and any October 14 vote remain follow-up questions; volunteers should not treat this discussion as tax relief already granted.
