PUTNAM — Former Putnam Science Academy students have a state-run route to request their transcripts after the boarding school closed in June and left families without access to academic records.
The Connecticut Department of Education says it took custody of paper files and obtained electronic student data from PowerSchool after paying the school’s outstanding invoices. The Day reported Wednesday that state officials described recovering 27 boxes and said students were beginning to receive transcripts.
For students trying to transfer or continue their education, the next step is the department’s online transcript-request form. Its official request page explains how to submit identification securely. The state cautions that the paper files are incomplete and may not contain records for every former student.
Some older documents have a deadline. The state’s notice says specified records for students who attended or graduated on or before June 30, 2020, may be destroyed on or after December 31, 2026. These include applications, student work, awards, special-education plans and visa materials. Former students can use the same request process to seek copies, if available.
That notice does not mean all transcripts will be destroyed in December. The department says it will retain grades and transcripts, immunization and attendance records, and biographical information for 50 years after graduation or departure.
The Day reported that the records recovery was discussed at Wednesday’s State Board of Education meeting. The request form and full retention notice are available at https://portal.ct.gov/sde/legal/legal-and-governmental-affairs/putnam-science-academy-transcript-requests.
