PUTNAM — A bicyclist suffered significant injuries in a collision with a vehicle at Killingly Avenue and Hurry Hill Road Monday morning and was flown to Rhode Island Hospital, according to the East Putnam Fire Department.
The department’s October 19 release says East Putnam firefighters, Putnam EMS, a Quinebaug Valley paramedic and Connecticut State Police Troop D were dispatched at approximately 8:29 a.m. WINY Radio also reported the response, attributing its account to the fire department.
Information in the initial 911 calls prompted Quinebaug Valley Emergency Communications dispatchers to request a medical helicopter through their Dispatcher-Initiated Auto Launch process, the department said.
Crews found the bicyclist in the roadway and a vehicle nearby. Rather than meeting the helicopter at the intersection, responders took the rider to nearby Day Kimball Hospital, where the helicopter met the patient for the transfer to Rhode Island Hospital for a higher level of care, according to the release.
The vehicle’s operator was evaluated at the scene, reported no injuries and did not request hospital transport, the department said.
The morning release reported Route 12 closed while State Police investigated. A later reopening notice was not obtained during this review; that morning statement is not confirmation that the road remains closed this evening.
The release did not identify the rider or driver, describe how the collision happened, announce charges or provide a later condition for the bicyclist. Those questions remain unresolved in the original material reviewed.
