BOSTON — Garrett Whitlock will remain with the Red Sox for 2027 after Boston exercised his $8.25 million option Sunday, according to an Associated Press report carried by WINY Radio. The decision prevented the right-hander from becoming a free agent.
Whitlock, 30, finished the season 7–2 with four saves in 54 relief appearances. He struck out 59 batters over 52⅓ innings and posted a career-best 1.72 earned-run average, the report said.
Boston’s November 1 announcement confirms the club exercised its 2027 option on Whitlock.
The option was part of the four-year, $18.75 million contract Whitlock agreed to in April 2022. Declining the 2027 option would have required a $1 million buyout, according to the AP account.
