PLAINFIELD — Plainfield High School’s marching band finished first in A–Group II at the October 31 USBands Connecticut State Championships in Vernon, earning 83.7 points. The organizer’s results list The Gilbert School second with 80.5.

The championship performance featured Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the band’s 2026 fall program. USBands lists four musical selections: Prelude, The Laboratory, Two Face and Mr. Hyde.

Plainfield also received Best Music, Best Percussion, Best Visual and Best Overall Effect awards, the Norwich Bulletin reported Wednesday, citing a community announcement. Those honors accounted for four of the five major performance categories.

James Flynn directs the band. Its competition schedule leading into the state championship included stops at Norwich Free Academy, Shepherd Hill Regional High School, Cranston High School East and Dartmouth High School.

The Bulletin reported that the championship followed rehearsals and conditioning that began in late summer, and that the program thanked school administrators, parent volunteers and the Plainfield community for their support.
