NORWICH — Norwich Free Academy teacher and wrestling coach Steven Nelson remains on paid administrative leave and is due in Norwich Superior Court November 13, The Day reported Friday.

Nelson, 39, has pleaded not guilty to third-degree assault and risk of injury to a minor. Police arrested him April 16 after investigating an allegation that he struck a student during a December 30, 2025 wrestling practice. The case remains pending.

The Day obtained more than a dozen letters submitted before his arrest in which former students and parents praised his teaching and coaching. The letters are character testimonials, not a court finding.

According to The Day’s account of police reports, Nelson described the contact as accidental. The school notified the Department of Children and Families and placed him on leave after learning of the allegation. His attorney declined comment to the newspaper.
