The National Weather Service has issued a freeze watch for northern New London County for early Sunday, October 18, with temperatures potentially falling to 31°F and threatening crops and other sensitive vegetation.

The watch’s stated period is midnight to 9 a.m. EDT Sunday—late Saturday night into Sunday morning, not Friday night. The New York forecast office in Upton issued it at 2:18 p.m. Friday, October 16.

The notice covers the Northern New London forecast zone, not the county’s southern coastal zone. Norwich’s official forecast page displays the watch. It also covers northern Fairfield, New Haven and Middlesex forecast zones, plus specified areas of New York and New Jersey.

Forecasters advise taking steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. A watch means freezing conditions are possible; it does not guarantee they will occur at every property.

This weekend cold-weather risk is separate from Friday evening’s showers and possible thunderstorms. Check the latest NWS notice and local forecast before the overnight period because the forecast and alert status can change.
