MANSFIELD — Homeowners with private wells can check whether they qualify for free PFAS testing through a program run by UConn Extension and the Connecticut Department of Public Health.

Eligibility is limited to selected areas and to homeowners who exclusively own a private well at their primary residence, according to UConn’s Connecticut Institute of Water Resources. A home’s eligibility must be checked individually; living in a particular town does not by itself establish qualification.

Participants receive instructions and a sampling kit after an educational presentation, then collect a sample at home and return it as directed. The program also offers no-cost treatment assistance when PFAS levels exceed Connecticut’s health-based standards.

People who cannot attend a presentation may still obtain a kit if eligible. UConn provides a recording and directs those homeowners to Alec Janis at alec.janis@uconn.edu for details.

Homeowners can check eligibility and sign up for event details through UConn’s program page at https://ctiwr.uconn.edu/pfas-testing/.
