HAMPTON — A monthly accounting-coordination plan was presented at the elementary school board’s September 23 meeting following differences between town and school financial records, the Hampton Gazette reported September 29.
According to the newspaper, the proposal would regularly compare year-end entries, checking-account activity and grant transactions across the two accounting systems. It would check that items such as voided checks, deposits and grant reimbursements were recorded consistently. The stated purpose was reliable information for both the school board and Board of Finance.
The Gazette reported that the records had been reconciled by August 26 and that the auditor recommended monthly or quarterly comparisons to catch differences sooner. Presenting a plan is not the same as demonstrating that each subsequent monthly reconciliation has been completed.
In a separate September 29 account of the September 17 town meeting, the Gazette said financial reconciliation delayed the school-budget referendum. It reported a revised proposal with a 4.19% increase, after the original 5.77% increase failed in June. The revised proposal included two additional paraprofessionals.
Those newspaper accounts are related reporting from one outlet, not independent confirmation. The precise disputed dollar amount is omitted because the two accounts differ. No claim of fraud or individual wrongdoing is established by this report.
The town’s official Board of Finance page describes its responsibilities for the budget, tax rate, financial records and annual audit. It lists an October 14 meeting at 7 p.m. in the Town Hall Community Room; that listing does not prove the accounting plan is on tonight’s agenda.
Original September school-minute links could not be retrieved during this check. The town’s prominently labeled 2026 referendum-results document covers June 9, not the October vote. The October outcome and current implementation status remain unverified here; readers can consult the linked school-records index and town finance board for subsequent records.
