GROTON — Pfizer plans a $650 million Manufacturing Technology Center at its Groton research campus, with construction expected to begin in the second quarter of 2027 and operations targeted for mid-2031, AdvanceCT announced Thursday, November 5.

The approximately 220,000-square-foot building would make drug ingredients and finished drug products for Pfizer-sponsored clinical trials worldwide. The investment is planned over five years.

For local workers, the announcement describes bringing employees from other Groton campus facilities into one purpose-built center. It does not announce a specific number of additional permanent jobs. The project would modernize facilities supporting the existing workforce, according to AdvanceCT.

The timetable also places the project’s next steps in planning and construction, rather than immediate production. AdvanceCT said the City of Groton will work with Pfizer through planning, construction and startup.

Pfizer’s own campus profile says its Groton research site dates to 1959 and covers 175 acres, with 2.17 million square feet of laboratory and office space. Its work includes clinical development, pharmaceutical sciences, drug safety and supplying materials for clinical research.

The planned center would expand that clinical-manufacturing role. Its construction and opening dates remain targets, rather than completed milestones.
