East Putnam’s Engine-Tank 179 has returned to service after a major refurbishment, according to an October 26 fire-department announcement republished by Quiet Corner Alerts.

The 2005 E-ONE was originally built for East Putnam and remains a first-due attack apparatus for many calls, the announcement says. The department chose refurbishment after reviewing the apparatus market and bids, describing its cost as approximately one-tenth that of buying a new vehicle. It did not provide the actual project price or replacement bids.

The work included pump servicing and digital gauges, improved headlights and scene lighting, replacement air-conditioning equipment and new mirrors. Crew-focused changes included breathing-apparatus holders, an access ladder, additional hose storage, an extended front bumper and changes to the rear step and wheel wells.

The announcement also lists automatic tire chains, a pneumatic siren and new lettering. Although the truck now carries Engine 1 branding, the department says it will continue using the Engine-Tank 179 designation for district responses and Quinebaug Valley mutual-aid assignments.

The department says the investment is intended to improve reliability and safety while extending the life of the existing apparatus. No specific additional service-life guarantee was given.
