EAST LYME — The Zoning Commission has approved new limits on short-term rentals, a decision intended to restrict their growth in residential neighborhoods while treating existing rentals differently, according to The Day’s October 20 report.

The newspaper reported a 4–2 vote on the amendment at the commission’s October 15 meeting. The town’s amended agenda independently confirms that an application to add Section 20.29 governing short-term rentals was scheduled for consideration that evening.

Under the rules described by The Day, new rentals would be allowed in the residential portions of mixed-use buildings in the CA and CB commercial districts. The report describes a 14-day minimum stay, registration requirements and on-site parking obligations.

The newspaper also reports a $500 annual permit requirement and possible revocation after more than three verified complaints of unruly behavior. It says existing rental operations are grandfathered, while still subject to the fee.

Black Point Beach Club Association, Crescent Beach Association and Giants Neck Beach Association have their own zoning regulations and are outside the amendment’s scope, according to the report.

The decision follows a town committee’s review of complaints about neighborhood disruption and parking. Supporters argued for retaining residential character; opponents questioned the minimum stay and restrictions on property use.

The Day reports that the amendment takes effect October 24. The final adopted text and an individual property’s zoning status should be confirmed with the town before owners make rental decisions. The official agenda verifies consideration of the proposal; the vote, final terms and effective date here are attributed to the newspaper’s meeting coverage.
