EAST LYME — Superintendent Jeffrey Newton has been appointed executive director of Cooperative Educational Services, a Fairfield County regional education service center, with a January 7,2027 start date. C.E.S. confirmed the appointment in an October public news release.
The Day reported Wednesday that Newton will leave East Lyme in December, with his final day falling during winter break. Its report did not establish an exact final date. The school board is discussing a superintendent-search committee, but the hiring process had not begun, according to the newspaper.
For East Lyme families and employees, the immediate issue is the leadership transition and how the district will choose its next superintendent. No successor or completed replacement-search timetable was identified in the report reviewed Wednesday.
C.E.S. is one of Connecticut’s six regional educational service centers. Its appointment announcement says it provides programs and support for Fairfield County students and educators, along with executive-search services statewide. The agency said its own search used stakeholder feedback to develop a leadership profile before candidate interviews.
Newton was named Connecticut’s 2026 Superintendent of the Year by the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents. Before East Lyme, he led Hebron Public Schools; his earlier work included special-services leadership in Westbrook, a principalship in Oakdale and special-education teaching in Norwich, according to C.E.S.
The new job and January 7 start are confirmed by the hiring organization. The departure arrangements and East Lyme board’s preliminary search discussions are attributed to The Day’s October 21 reporting; additional district decisions will need a later update.
