NORWALK — Travelers using Connecticut’s shoreline rail corridor should check their trip before leaving: WALK Bridge work continues to affect select weekends between Stamford and New Haven, while East Norwalk station remains closed through Sunday, October 18.
The program’s construction notice for the week of October 12 says no trains will stop at East Norwalk in either direction during the closure. It directs passengers to South Norwalk or Westport instead. That station closure is separate from the broader weekend service changes.
The north station parking lot is unavailable. East Norwalk permits are being honored at the commuter lot at 182 East Avenue, the project notice says. It also links a special Norwalk Transit District bus-service notice; riders should consult that original notice for its timetable.
CTDOT’s September 9 explanation says the modified weekend operation supports removal of two 234-foot utility towers and overhead systems at the existing Norwalk River railroad bridge. The work affects Metro-North and Amtrak on selected weekends through November 1, rather than establishing one reduced schedule for every day.
For affected weekends, CTDOT describes reduced train frequency and capacity east of Stamford, a New Haven–Bridgeport shuttle and a Grand Central–South Norwalk service pattern. Amtrak service between New York and New Haven is also limited during the work. Passengers connecting from farther east should verify both legs.
The September release includes numerical service reductions for specific September weekends. Those figures should not be applied to October trips. An exact October weekend frequency or seat-reduction percentage was not established from the readable official notices reviewed for this report.
Use MTA’s current alerts and TrainTime information for the intended departure, and Amtrak’s own booking information for intercity availability. The WALK Bridge program cautions that construction plans can change because of weather or unforeseen conditions.
