Connecticut students preparing college applications have two fee-free opportunities beginning Thursday, October 15. UConn and Southern Connecticut State University have posted separate waiver periods for next year’s entering students, with different deadlines and eligibility rules.
UConn’s admissions office says applicants for fall 2027 qualify if they have an active Connecticut mailing address or attend a secondary school in the state. Its window runs October 15 through November 2, 2026. The standard application charge is $80.
Applicants should choose the Application Fee Free Day waiver option on UConn’s college listing within their application. Despite the program’s name, UConn explicitly allows the waiver throughout that extended window, not just November 2. Its instructions say the university does not issue waiver codes.
Southern announced its offer October 8. Connecticut high school seniors applying for the 2027–28 academic year can avoid its $50 charge by completing the first-year application October 15 through November 15. Southern directs students to its admissions website; the announcement does not list a promotional code.
For applicants considering UConn’s Storrs or Avery Point campuses, the first-year instructions accept either the Common Application or Coalition Application. They also require an essay and academic records; letters of recommendation and standardized test scores are optional. Waiving the application charge does not remove those requirements or pay tuition.
Students should compare each institution’s official instructions before submitting rather than assume one waiver covers every college. UConn also says applicants eligible for its traditional fee waivers can select the appropriate option outside this special period. These dates concern application fees, not a promise of admission or an extension of program-specific application deadlines.
