NEW HAVEN — Southern Connecticut State University students and faculty are mourning English professor Michael Shea, who died October 24 after being struck by an electric bike in a hit-and-run earlier this month, NBC Connecticut reported Monday.

The outlet, citing New Haven police, reported that Shea was crossing near Whalley and West Rock avenues with his wife around 9 p.m. October 9 when he was struck. Police spokesperson Christian Bruckhart told NBC the rider left the scene.

English Department Chair Cindy Stretch described Shea’s commitment to teaching and university service. Students interviewed by NBC said he encouraged their studies and helped build their confidence.

Police were still seeking the rider as of NBC’s October 26 report. No later arrest or case outcome has been independently verified for this article. Anyone with information can contact New Haven police.
