Connecticut’s I-91 sign-replacement and exit-renumbering project is scheduled to begin Thursday, October 15, covering the highway from New Haven to the Massachusetts line, according to an October 5 CTDOT construction advisory.

The change replaces sequential exit numbers with numbers tied to highway mileage. CTDOT says this makes distances between exits easier to judge and helps emergency crews locate incidents. The route and interchange destinations are not being replaced by the numbering change.

Drivers should expect temporary northbound and southbound lane or shoulder closures as work moves along the corridor. CTDOT lists weekday work windows of 9 a.m.–3 p.m. and 6 p.m.–6 a.m., subject to weather and other changes. The advisory does not identify which exit will be changed first.

The Quaker Corporation is performing the work. The project-specific advisory gives September 2028 as its scheduled completion; CTDOT’s general renumbering FAQ still lists an approximate 2027 date for I-91. This report uses the newer, project-specific schedule rather than treating the two dates as interchangeable.

CTDOT’s transition guidance calls for markers showing old exit numbers at key locations for at least two years, giving drivers and businesses time to update directions. Its interactive map is linked from the exit-renumbering page.

For Eastern Connecticut residents using I-91, check the state’s old-to-new mapping before a trip and follow posted work-zone signs. Today’s scheduled start is not confirmation that every sign has changed or that a particular lane is currently closed.
