U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney said a staff member at his Enfield office opened a mailed envelope containing an unknown white substance and a malicious letter Friday, October 16.

The staff member was OK, according to Courtney’s statement reproduced in an October 16 report by Patch staff writer Brian McCready. Courtney said his office notified the United States Capitol Police.

His statement thanked Enfield police and emergency responders, the Connecticut State Police Bomb Squad and the FBI for their response and investigation.

The account does not identify the substance or establish that it was hazardous. Eastern CT News has not obtained an independent laboratory finding or a confirmed link to other suspicious-mail cases. No suspect or arrest is established in this report.

These details are attributed to Courtney’s statement as published by Patch; they are not an Eastern CT News eyewitness account.
