CANTERBURY — State police are investigating an October 22 crash in which a car struck a utility pole on Gay Head Road and its driver left the scene on foot, according to an October 27 WINY Radio report citing the police account.
WINY reported that Troop D was dispatched around 10:45 p.m. Thursday to the area approximately 500 feet west of Water Street. A westbound Volkswagen Jetta lost control and struck a pole, snapping it and bringing it down onto the car, the outlet reported.
The report identified the driver as Fletcher Ballaro, 21, of Norwich. It said a witness reported seeing him leave on foot with a dog. These details are attributed to WINY's account of the police report; Eastern CT News has not independently obtained that report.
The car sustained disabling damage and was towed, according to WINY. Eversource was called because of the damaged pole.
WINY said the crash remained under investigation. Its report did not state that anyone had been charged or provide an injury finding, and it did not establish when the pole was repaired or whether a road restriction remains in place. This is reporting on last Thursday's crash, not a new traffic alert.
This report is based on WINY Radio's account; Eastern CT News did not witness the crash.
